Turkey leads Europe for tourism growth
Turkey is leading the way in Europe for tourism growth, displaying the most expansion in provisional 2007 figures released by the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) today (Tuesday, January 29th).
The country's tourism sector registered growth of 18 per cent, leaving other European nations such as Greece and Portugal trailing in its wake, reports the DPA.
Turkey was one of the fastest-growing countries in the world in 2007, even eclipsing the US, Argentina and South Africa.
WTO Secretary-General Francesco Frangialli commented: "While mature markets remain the leading destinations, the faster growth rate of new markets confirms tourism's potential for the developing world."
According to Yeald, the investor journal, Turkey has outperformed the expectations of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).
Figures from Turofed show that 22.3 million people visited the country during the first 11 months of 2007.
