Turkey has left a lasting impression on one US travel writer, who enjoyed everything from the food to the accommodation during his nine day stay.

Matt Lauer, star of the 'Where In The World Is Matt Lauer' tour project, was particularly delighted by what was on offer to tourists in Istanbul.

He said: "It is the most densely populated and cosmopolitan city in Turkey, and in my experience it remains the center of Turkish culture. Each neighborhood within the city retains its own distinct character."

Of the cuisine, he noted: "Like Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food, Turkish cuisine is all about flavor and spices (caution: you must love garlic and lemon)."

One of Turkey's most spectacular tourist attractions is the Blue Mosque, which boasts a stunning 16 balconies and six minarets.

The complex contains Sultan Ahmet's tomb and strands of the Prophet Muhammad's beard.
