Babacan leads Turkeys EU push
Turkey's chief EU negotiator Ali Babacan has said he is confident the country can overcome any obstacles to gaining membership of the organisation.
Speaking after the joint parliamentary commission meeting between Turkey and the EU, Mr Babacan said he was confident all the required reforms necessary to clear a path to membership would be implemented, reports The New Anatolian.
Mr Babacan commented: "The EU will become a real global power after it admits Turkey into the union.
"Turkey has always been a part of Europe's history, politics and cultural geography.
"Accordingly, those who are against Turkey's EU membership cannot change the natural dynamics of the geography."
He said Turkey would expect support from its friends such as Italy, who recently participated in the fourth Italy-Turkey forum in Istanbul.
A customs union agreement between Turkey and the EU means goods pass through freely without any custom restrictions.
