Fishing in Turkey

Being a Mediterranean country, Turkey offers a wide variety of opportunities for fishing in Turkey in the ocean and catch creatures they would not find back the UK.

Whether it is from a boat or a beach, anglers have come away impressed with the fishing in Turkey that is on offer in Anatolia.

Although not as popular a pastime in Turkey as it is in the British Isles, it is still a hobby that tourists can indulge in and adapt the local methods. Seasoned anglers may be surprised at the bait used for instance, with bread paste or even chicken being used rather than the more traditional maggots. However, the local fish are said to be attracted to this and come up to indulge in the treat.

Similarly, Turkey's stunning beaches can offer more than just the opportunity for sunbathing. Harbour walls are also good spots for fishing in Turkey and there are several scattered along Turkey's coast.

Those who have been recommend that anyone looking to fish from the beach should wait until the evening when the temperature cools and the sunbathers and swimmers are safely out of the way. This practice is not for those who want to avoid attention though as rod fishing is still novel enough to draw curious but friendly locals.

Unlike Britain though, night-time fishing in Turkey can be a warming experience in more ways than one. The Mediterranean climate ensures that the summer nights are never chilly, but the social scene is also tempting to anglers. Once done with a night's fishing, most of the nearby shops in any resort are open until the morning, so fishers may join partygoers in staying up all night to eat, drink and enjoy their favourite pastime, whatever that may have got away.

While this is tempting for many, those going with families find there are other ways for tourists to indulge their passion for poisson while keeping a family happy. Hiring a yacht means that one can indulge in the traditional manner of net fishing in Turkey or rod fishing, while allowing the rest of the family the opportunity to sunbathe on deck or see the coast.

In addition, gulet cruises are the time-honoured way of seeing Anatolia's coast in a traditional wooden vessel. As well as giving tourists the chance to see parts of Turkey they would otherwise miss, some luxury vessels allow fishing in Turkey to take place out at sea away from crowded areas.

Fishing is allowed without a licence in most areas, as long as the equipment is not for professional, commercial use and it is best to check if prohibited or military areas exist. However, the Aegean and Mediterranean offer rich pickings for fishermen and women keen to sling their hooks in new seas and may even be tempted to stay.

Turkey has over 8,000km of the most breathtaking coastline. Good value Turkey property is available on the majority of it, but the popular resorts are located on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts.  Owning Turkey property allows you to enjoy the many types of sport in Turkey and everything this varied country has to offer.
